San Diego City Council declares July 2014 as "Ask Saves Kids Month"

Asking Saves Kids Month

WHEREAS, in America, one out of three homes with children has a gun, and nearly 1.7 million children live in a home with a loaded, unlocked gun; AND
WHEREAS, in America, eighty percent of unintentional firearm deaths of children under fifteen occur in a home; AND
WHEREAS, every year thousands of children are killed and injured; on average, nine children and teens are shot each day in gun accidents; AND
WHEREAS, summer is a season when kids typically spend more time at the homes of friends, neighbors, and other family members; AND
WHEREAS, parents ask all sorts of health and safety questions before their children play at someone else’s home. They ask about pets, allergies, Internet access, and supervision. Yet, fewer than half of parents ask if there is an unlocked gun in the home; AND
WHEREAS, children are naturally curious; if a gun is accessible in someone’s home, there is a good chance a child will find it and play with it; AND
WHEREAS, asking this simple question is an important step every parent can take to help keep their child safe, and possibly save their child’s life; AND
WHEREAS, the Asking Saves Kids (ASK) Campaign promotes a simple idea with the potential to help keep children safe. The campaign reminds parents to ASK “Is there an unlocked gun in your house?” before sending their child over to play at the house of a friend, neighbor, or family member; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Council of the City of San Diego, that this Council, for and on behalf of the people of San Diego, does hereby declare July 2014, to be “ASK Month” in the City of San Diego and recognize the importance of children’s safety when they visit a friend, neighbor, or family member’s home.
