San Diego Brady and Moms take action

Brady and Moms at Congresswoman Susan Davis's office.  Representative Davis has been a strong supporter of the GVP movement and is a co-sponsor of a bill to expand background checks to all gun sale.

  • December Vigils
    On December 10th and December 13th we remembered half a million victims of gun violence in the United States. It's been 5 years since Sandy Hook tragic events. How much longer it will go on?

  • Mon, Oct.16: Downtown San Diego   
    San Diego Chapters of Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action stuffed dozens of handbags with toiletries to help out with the Family Justice Center's Handbags for Hope project. Family Justice Center provides resources to domestic violence survivors and is located at 1122 Broadway, 92101. Abused women are 5 times more likely to be killed if their abuser owns a firearm.

  • Sat, Jul.15: San Diego Pride Parade, Hillcrest  
    San Diego Chapter of Brady Campaign marched at San Diego Pride Parade together with Moms Demand Action and Everytown 
  • Sun, Apr. 23: Earth Fair, Balboa Park  
    Brady Campaign had a booth at the Earth Fair in Balboa Park again this year. We were thrilled to see how many people show their concerns about gun violence situation in the U.S. and support Brady Campaign in their effort to find a common ground on the sensible gun regulation arena. 

We were busy in 2016:

  • Wed, Dec.14: Nationwide Memorial Vigil for All Gun Violence Victims  
    Over 100 people gathered in the St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral for the multiconfessional memorial service for all gun violence victims including Sandy Hook and Orlando. Speeches were held by religious leaders of Christianity, Islam and Judism, by local elected officials, including Scott Peters and Chris Ward followed by prayers and blessings from The Rt. Reverend James Mathes, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego.
    Earlier that afternoon SD Brady Campagn members and supporters attended a rally on the 5th St., San Diego covered by four locat TV channels.
  • Sat & Sun, Sep 24-25: Adams Avenue Street Fair and Concert Across America
    Among 350 concerts across the United States, San Diego Chapter of Brady Campaign invited 5 bands - including one consisted of its members - on Sunday September 25 to Grassroots Oasis to join the nationwide movement to honor the memory of the victims of gun violence.

  • Thu, Sep 22: "Making A Killing" documentary screening
    In honor of the UN's International Day of Peace, COMPASSION IT with co-sponsorship of San Diego Brady Campaign made their first documentary screening at Digital Gym CINEMA.
  • Tue, Aug 2: National Night Out at Logan Heights Memorial Park
    A great opportunity to educate families about the ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Campaign and encourage parents to make sure all firearms are securely locked up when there are kids around
  • Sat & Sun, Jul 16-17: San Diego Pride Parade and Festival, Balboa Park
    Such a significant weekend! San Diego Brady group marched in the parade right behind Scott Peters and his followers spreading "Disarm Hate" message. So many people came to visit our booth and support us!

    Copley Price YMCA (Jun 29th) and  Mission Valley YMCA (Jun 30th)

    Councilmembers Marti Emerald and Myrtle Cole presented us with the ASK Proclamation for 2016. July is now San Diego's official ASK month this year! The kids loved leaving their hand-print. Asking Saves Kids.

    MOMS Orange Walk, days before the elections! We walked to honor American lives lost to gun violence and show that we will do whatever it takes to protect our communities, our families and our children!

    We talked to lots of people, obtained 100 signatures to get Gavin Newsome’s Safety for All initiative on the ballot for November, and signed up lots of new folks for our e-mail list include several young people who we would LOVE to get into our organization. We were interviewed live at the Social Justice Radio and quoted in San Diego Union Tribune.

Jessi Ghawi was a beautiful 24-year-old aspiring sports reporter when she and 11 others were gunned down and killed in the tragic Aurora theater shooting in July 2012. Her parents, Sandy and Lonnie Phillips, will be in San Diego to talk about what their organization, Jessi’s Message, is doing to support other victims and survivors of this country’s rampant gun violence and to discuss the sensible gun legislation that is needed to prevent shootings like this from happening again and again.

    ​NASW Region E is partnering with the Brady Campaign to provide an intelligent forum to discuss the increasing prevalence and incidence of gun violence in our communities. Its time to look at creative ways to combat this epidemic that faces our communities. Dr. Glenn Lipson will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Lipson is a subject matter expert and authority on this subject. There will also be many other speakers and presentations. The goal will be to create a forum to discuss this issue and use the event as a launchpad for action steps. The event itself is free. There will be a 10.00 registration charge that will cover lunch.

This is part of UCSD's program of Quarterly Health Conversations. Join us for an informative discussion and Q/A.
  • January 2, 2016: Postcard Addressing – we got started with a bang at our monthly meeting, where we addressed and stamped awesomely designed postcards to send a message to all U.S. Senators that enough is enough.

  • Met with San Diego Unified School District, San Diego County County Office of Education, Lemon Grove School District, Santee School District, and Vista PTA parent group to: promote the memo sent by California State Superintendent on Public Instruction, Tom Torkalson, urging all school to inform parents of their responsibility to store firearms safely, and the consequences mandated by California law which hold parents responsible when a child brings a firearm to school, inform parents about California law regarding safe storage of weapons (AB 231, TING), provide ASK (Asking Saves Kids) information to parents, and provide Speak Up hotline information to students.  
  • Spoke at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Diego regarding gun violence prevention on Mother's Day. 
  • Requesting lawmakers to support or oppose current gun legislation.
  • Sending representatives to the California State Convention in Orange County and the National Summit in Washington, D.C. 
  • Hosting the 3rd Annual San Diengo Brady Campaign fundraiser in October 2015 - please email for more information.

And we were busy in 2014 too! 

And here's everything we accomplished in 2014:
  • Participated in 3 street fairs : Earth Day, RBAlive and Politifest.
  • Collaborated with UAMAAC, Police & Sheriff’s departments on September gun buy-back, collecting over 300 weapons.
  • Worked with San Diego Councilmember Marti Emerald to declare July “San Diego ASK month,” encouraging parents to ask if there’s an unlocked gun where their children play.
  • Called Washington State voters who successfully passed a state initiative to require background checks on all guns.
  • Joined Newtown Action Alliance’s “Light the Night” campaign commemorating Sandy Hook.
  • Wrote emails and made phone calls to law makers to request their support of sensible gun laws.

Both bills expand background checks to all gun sales.  Since its inception the background check law has stopped 3 million gun sales to prohibited purchases, but it has loopholes that the two current bills would close.
